Last Saturday of the Year: A Tradition of Resilience

Last Saturday of the Year: A Tradition of Resilience

The Last Saturday of the Year started in 2022 as a simple idea: tick off a marathon before the clock ran out on the year. No medals, no fanfare—just a course, a goal, and the will to finish. I mapped out a looped route, 5 x 8.3km laps that add up to the legendary 42.2km marathon distance. My car became the aid station, and a few mates joined me on this mission of grit.

It wasn’t about pace or competition—it was about completion. People came and went, joining for different laps as the day unfolded. But by the end of that Saturday, the goal was ticked off. A marathon was run.

Year Two: A Storm and Unfinished Business

Last year, the Last Saturday of the Year grew. Twice as many people showed up, driven by the same determination to close the year strong. But Mother Nature had other plans. A relentless storm struck just shy of 30km, forcing us to abandon the run. It wasn’t a failure—it was a lesson in resilience.

We didn’t let the story end there. On Good Friday, we came back. We called it Unfinished Business, and we finished what we started. That’s the essence of the Last Saturday of the Year. It’s not just a run—it’s a statement.

Finish the Year Strong

This year, I’m inviting as many people as possible to join in. Whether you’re running a single lap, setting out for the full marathon, or even walking your own course, the goal is the same: do something before this year is out. Don’t wait for New Year’s resolutions. Don’t delay the hard things.

The Spirit of Mental Fortitude

The Last Saturday of the Year is about more than running. It’s about living the ethos of Mental Fortitude:

  • Face the Challenge: Push past comfort. Do what’s hard.
  • Be Your Own Inspiration: You don’t need applause or approval—just the will to take action.
  • Close Strong, Start Stronger: The way you finish one year sets the tone for the next.

This is your chance to embrace the challenge, to show yourself what you’re capable of. Whether the day brings sunshine or storms, it’s not about the weather—it’s about your resolve.

Join Us

On the Last Saturday of the Year, we’ll gather again. Lace up, show up, and set out. Together, let’s prove that how you finish matters.

Don’t delay. Do the hard things. Be your own inspiration.
